It is a sport where a team of one man and one woman skate together. This discipline draws its inspiration from ballroom dancing. Skaters use music to guide their movements across the ice. They aim to show grace and connection with their partner. This sport is much more than just skating in circles. It is a way to tell a story through movement.

To perform well, skaters must master several specific elements. These moves make a dance program feel balanced and exciting. They include the dance lift and the dance spin. Skaters also perform step sequences and twizzles, which are fast spinning steps. They may also use special choreographic elements to add flair. Every move must follow rules set by the International Skating Union, or ISU. If a skater falls or breaks a rule about time, they lose points.

This sport has a long and interesting history. In the 1800s, people skated for fun in social clubs. They practiced waltzes and marches with friends and partners. An American named Jackson Haines is known as the "Father of Figure Skating."

In the late 1800s, he brought his dancing style to Europe. He taught people in Vienna how to dance on the ice. He introduced the American waltz, which is a simple four-step sequence. By the end of the 19th century, waltzing on ice became very popular worldwide.

Ice dance grew from a hobby into a major competition. The first national contests happened in the 1930s in several places. England held its first in 1934, followed by Canada in 1935. The United States held its first in 1936, and Austria in 1937. Ice dance joined the World Figure Skating Championships in 1952. It later became an Olympic medal sport in 1976.

British teams were very strong in the 1950s and 1960s. Later, Soviet teams became the leaders of the sport.

Today, ice dance is a mix of tradition and theater. In the 1980s, some skaters tried to make it more like a play. They used ballet moves and dramatic themes in their programs. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean from Britain were very famous for this.

Their famous dance to the music "Boléro" changed how people saw the sport. Competition rules have changed over time to keep the sport fair. In 2018, the ISU even renamed the short dance to the rhythm dance. Now, teams from North America are very successful in these competitions.
