Speed skating is a fast way to race on ice. Athletes use sharp blades to glide across frozen tracks at high speeds.

People love this sport because it shows great skill and speed. There are three main types of racing. Long-track speed skating happens on a large 400-meter oval track. Short-track speed skating uses a smaller 111.12-meter oval, often inside a hockey rink. Finally, marathon speed skating involves long distances on ice.

In long-track racing, skaters usually compete in pairs. They must switch lanes on every lap to keep the distance fair. Short-track racing is different because skaters race in groups. These groups often have four or five people in a heat. In these group races, skaters might even touch each other.

Sometimes skaters fall or get disqualified during these close races. In some mass-start races, there are even rules for elimination. This means some racers are removed from the race at certain points.

Speed skating has a history that goes back over a thousand years. Long ago, people in Northern Europe used bones on their shoes. They used these bone skates to travel across frozen rivers and lakes.

A Norwegian King named Eystein I even boasted about his skill on bone skates. In 1592, a Scotsman designed a skate with an iron blade. These iron blades helped the sport spread to many more places. By 1763, the first detailed race happened in England. A man named John Lamb won a prize of 20 guineas there.

Many important groups and rules helped the sport grow. The International Skating Union, or ISU, was founded in 1892. It was the very first international federation for a winter sport.

The ISU set the standard 400-meter track size in 1892. They also set the distances for world championships. These include the 500, 1500, 5000, and 10,000-meter races. Speed skating also became part of the Olympic Games in 1924. Charles Jewtraw won the first Olympic gold medal in that year.

Today, many countries enjoy watching and playing this sport. It is very popular in the Netherlands, Norway, and South Korea.

In the Netherlands, skaters sometimes race on natural ice in canals. They call these long races marathons. One famous event is the Elfstedentocht, which started in 1909. Because natural ice is hard to find, people also use artificial tracks. Some skaters even travel to places like Canada or Finland for races. This keeps the tradition of marathon skating alive for everyone.
