Athletes perform many different types of activities to win medals. The very first games only had five main sports. These were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing, and skating. Nordic skiing includes things like cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Skating includes figure skating and speed skating. Today, the games have grown to include snowboarding and luge. Some older sports, like military patrol, have changed into new ones like biathlon.

History shows how these games began a long time ago. The first Winter Olympics took place in 1924 in Chamonix, France. Before that, a man named Viktor Gustaf Balck organized the Nordic Games. He wanted to see winter sports in the Olympics. In 1928, the games moved to St. Moritz, Switzerland. That year, the weather was very difficult for the athletes. A blizzard even happened during the opening ceremony.

Many different countries have traveled to host these games. They have been held on three different continents. The United States has hosted the games four times. France and Italy have each hosted three times. Other places like Japan, Canada, and South Korea have hosted too. Some countries are very successful in these competitions. Twelve countries have participated in every single Winter Olympics. The United States is the only nation to win a gold medal at every game.

There are special traditions that make the games feel important. In 1952, the Olympic Flame tradition was first started in Oslo. A torch relay was held where 94 people carried the flame on skis. This bright flame is a symbol for the athletes. The games move to new locations for each event. Italy will host the games in 2026. The next games will be in the French Alps in 2030.
