Athletes race down narrow, icy tracks. These tracks are built with high, banked walls. Gravity pulls the heavy sled down the hill. This makes the sled go very fast. Teams compete to get the fastest time. They do this by adding up times from several runs. This is called an aggregate time.

Teams work together to win. A four-person crew has a pilot, a brakeman, and two pushers. The race starts with a powerful push. The crew pushes the sled for 50 meters. Then they jump inside to ride. The pilot steers using two metal rings. These rings move a pulley system. This system turns the front runners.

The pilot must be very precise. Small moves help guide the sled. If the pilot moves too much, the sled might crash. The brakeman pulls a lever to stop the sled at the end.

This sport has a long history.

It began in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In the 1870s, wealthy English guests used delivery sleds. They raced through the streets of the town. This caused collisions with people walking. Eventually, the town banned racing on public roads. A hotel owner named Caspar Badrutt built a natural ice run. He did this to keep his guests happy. This track was built near a place called Cresta.

The Cresta Run is the oldest track. It is still used today. The first club formed in 1897. A special track for bobsleigh opened in 1902. Bobsleigh has been in almost every Winter Olympics. The first games were in Chamonix, France, in 1924. The men's four-man event started then. The two-man event joined in 1932. Women began competing in the Olympics in 2002.

The women's monobob event started in 2022.

Modern bobsleighs are very high-tech.

They use metal, steel, and fiberglass. Tracks are now made of concrete coated with ice. A good track has at least fifteen curves. It must also have a labyrinth. A labyrinth is three quick turns in a row. Sleds can reach very high speeds. Some curves make the crew feel 5 g of force.
