The first games were in 1924 in Chamonix, France. At that time, there were only five sports. These were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing, and skating. Since then, the games have grown. New sports like snowboarding and freestyle skiing are now part of the program. Some sports, like luge, also have a permanent spot.

Many countries join the games. Twelve countries have been at every Winter Olympics. These include Canada, Italy, and the United States. The United States is the only country to win a gold medal at every game. Norway has won the most total medals.

There are special traditions, too. In 1952, the Olympic Flame was added. This is a torch that carries fire.
