The IOC plans the Summer, Winter, and Youth Olympics. The first Summer Games were in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The first Winter Games were in France in 1924. Before 1992, Summer and Winter games happened in the same year. Now, they are held in different years. This helps with planning and money.

The IOC has many goals. They want to promote fair play in sports. They also work to protect the environment. In 1996, they made the environment a main part of their vision. They want to keep athletes healthy and safe. They also fight against cheating.

A new leader named Kirsty Coventry was elected in 2025. She is the first woman and the first African to lead the group. She wants the games to bring the world together.
