Canoe sprint is a fast water sport. Athletes race specially designed boats on calm water. This sport is also called flatwater racing. It is governed by the International Canoe Federation, or ICF. People compete in many different ways. They race over 200, 500, 1000, or 5000 meters.

Some races have one person in the boat. Other races use crews of two or four. These crews race in lanes marked by buoys. The 5000 meter race is a bit different. Athletes start in a large pack and follow a course with turns.

There are two main types of boats. In a kayak, the paddler sits down. They use a paddle with two blades. They also use their feet to move a rudder for steering. Many use a wing paddle to help with power. In a canoe, the paddler kneels on one knee. They use a paddle with only one blade. To stay on course, they use a special move called a J-stroke.

Some paddles have a bent shaft to help the paddler. High-performance boats often use carbon fiber to stay light and fast.

Modern canoeing began in the mid-19th century. Travelers made the sport popular in Europe and North America. A Scottish traveler named John "Rob Roy" MacGregor was very important. He wrote about his journeys through European waterways. His book, "A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe," inspired many people. He even founded the world's first canoe club in 1866. This club held the first modern canoeing competition in 1867. Later, he helped start the American Canoe Association in 1880.

International rules grew as the sport became more popular. In 1924, delegates from Germany, Austria, and Sweden formed a group. This group was the start of the International Canoe Federation. Canoeing joined the Summer Olympic Games in 1936. Men have competed in the Olympics since that year. Women began competing in 1948. For a long time, there were fewer events for women. However, the 2020 Olympics were the first to have an equal number of events for men and women.

Today, the sport has many exciting changes. The ICF holds an annual World Championship with many events. At the 2023 World Championships, a new rule was added for the 5000 meter race. Athletes must now do portages. This means they jump out and carry their boats for a short distance. This makes the race more interesting for people watching. There are even mixed races now. In these, a man and a woman race together in a K2 boat. This shows how the sport continues to grow and change.
