You use a single-bladed paddle to move the boat. This activity can happen in many places. People paddle on lakes, rivers, and even oceans. Some people use canoes for canoe camping. This means they travel to camp in nature. In some parts of Europe, the word canoeing includes kayaking too. They might call a canoe an "open canoe" or a "Canadian."

There are many ways to enjoy this sport. Some people like canoe racing for fun. Others try canoe polo or whitewater canoeing. There is also a sport called playboating. You can even try a canoe marathon. In a canoe marathon, people paddle for a long time. Some people just want to enjoy a calm pond or stream. It is a way to see the world from the water.

Canoeing is an ancient way to travel. Modern recreational canoeing began in the late 19th century. A man named Carl Smith helped make it a sport. He introduced canoeing to Sweden in the 1880s. Later, groups from four countries joined together. Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden all worked together. In 1924, they formed a group to help the sport grow. This group became the International Canoe Federation, or ICF.

Today, the ICF has more than 170 members. These include groups from America, Canada, Britain, Scotland, and Wales.

People have done amazing things with canoes. One man named Verlen Kruger was very famous. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he paddled a huge distance. He paddled over 100,000 miles in his lifetime! That is a record for anyone in the sport. Whether racing or camping, canoeing connects people to the water.
