Participants use a map and a compass to find their way through unfamiliar land. The goal is to visit several checkpoints as quickly as possible. These checkpoints are called control points.

This sport is not just about running fast. It is also about making smart choices. You must decide which path is the fastest way to reach the next point. Sometimes the shortest path is actually the hardest one to travel.

To succeed, you need to know how to read a special map.

These maps are very detailed and show things like hills and land shapes. They use standard symbols so anyone can read them.

On the map, the course is marked with purple or red lines. A triangle shows where you start, and a double circle shows the finish.

You can find the control points by looking for orange and white flags called kites.

A clue sheet might also tell you exactly where to look, such as near a specific rock.

Orienteering has a long history that began in Sweden.

It started in the late 19th century as a way to train soldiers. The Swedish word "orientering" was first used in 1886 at a military academy. The first public race happened in Norway in 1897. Later, in 1901, a Swedish event used historic sites like Spånga Church as checkpoints. As compasses became cheaper in the 1930s, the sport grew very fast. By 1934, about 250,000 people in Sweden were taking part.

Today, the sport is organized by the International Orienteering Federation, or IOF.

This group was formed in 1961 after a big meeting in Sweden. The IOF helps run many different types of orienteering. There is foot orienteering, which is the most common. There is also mountain bike orienteering, ski orienteering, and trail orienteering. Some people even do it underwater or with amateur radios. Many countries have their own groups, like Orienteering USA or the British Orienteering Federation.

There are many ways to enjoy this sport depending on your skill.

Beginners might use easy courses marked with colors like white or yellow. More experienced runners might choose harder blue or brown courses. People can also race in groups, like in the famous Jukola relay. Some people even use electronic devices to prove they visited each point.
