Cross country running is an exciting outdoor sport.

It is a natural-terrain version of long-distance track and road running. Runners race on open-air courses over ground like grass, dirt, or gravel. These paths often wind through woodlands or open country. The courses can include hills, flat ground, and even small obstacles. Because they are outdoors, runners face many weather conditions. They might run through rain, sleet, snow, or hail.

People of all ages and genders compete in these races.

There are many ways to race in this sport. It can be an individual race or a team event. In team races, people use a points-scoring method to find the winner. Some teams even include the word "Harriers" in their names.

To prepare, runners must train very hard. They also have to think about what they eat before a race. During the run, runners must choose a strategy. Some runners try to start very fast to get ahead of the crowd. Others prefer to run at a steady pace to save their energy. Some teammates run in a group to encourage each other.

Designing a course is a very important job.

The course must allow runners to pass one another. Officials use clear markings so no one takes a wrong turn. They might use tape, ribbon, paint, or cones. Some courses even use colored flags to show the way. Red flags mean turn left, and yellow flags mean turn right. Blue flags tell the runner to go straight. Most courses also have markings to show how many kilometers or miles are left. A course should also have a special area at the finish line to record the winners.

Cross country has a very long and interesting history.

Long ago, people raced for many reasons. A Scottish King named Malcolm III once held races to find fast messengers. In 1819, boys at Shrewsbury School started a club called "Hare and Hounds." Instead of hunting with dogs, they ran across the country. Some boys acted as "hares" and dropped paper scraps to leave a trail. The other runners followed the paper like a scent. This was called paper chasing. Over time, these fun games turned into the organized sport we see today.

Many famous competitions have grown from these early traditions. The first English championship was held in 1876. In 1903, the first International Cross Country Championships took place. Today, the best elite runners compete in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.

Runners use special equipment to help them on different surfaces. Most wear lightweight shoes called spikes. These have small metal pins on the bottom to help with grip. If the ground is very muddy, they use longer spikes. If the ground is hard, they might use shorter spikes or racing flats. This helps them stay steady on the natural terrain.
