Riders use special bikes to navigate rough terrain. This sport includes many different ways to compete. Some races test how long a person can ride. Other races test how fast a person can go downhill. People love the skill and speed required for these tasks. It is a sport that brings many different types of riders together.

There are two main groups of racing styles. The first group is called endurance-based disciplines. Cross-country (XCO) racing happens on circuits with rocks and forest roads. These races usually last between 80 and 100 minutes. Cross-country Marathon (XCM) racing is even tougher. Riders in these races might cover more than 80 km.

The second group is called gravity-based disciplines. Downhill (DHI) racing is a fast race against the clock. Riders go down steep hills and face tree roots. Men can reach speeds of 80 km/h in these races.

The history of this sport began in California. Early riders called themselves "klunkers." They used modified beach cruiser bikes to ride down mountains. They raced against time to see how fast they could go. One famous race was called Repack in 1976. It took place near Fairfax in Marin County. Later, the UCI began to officially recognize the sport. They held the first world championships in Durango, Colorado, in 1990.

Many important events happen around the world today. Cross-country racing became an Olympic sport in 1996. Since then, it has been held at every Summer Olympic Games. There are also special events like Crankworx in Canada. Other big races include the Sea Otter Classic in the USA. Even new types of racing are starting to appear. For example, the UCI started Snow Bike World Championships in 2024. These races happen on alpine skiing courses.

Mountain bike racing is connected to many other activities. Some races, like 4X, are inspired by BMX racing. Other styles like Dual Slalom were inspired by skiing. You can even find mountain bike orienteering. In that sport, riders use a map holder on their handlebars. They must choose the best path while riding at high speeds. Whether it is jumping over obstacles or racing through forests, there is a place for everyone.
