It started with people called klunkers. They used old beach bikes in California. They raced down mountains to test their speed. Later, the UCI began to lead the sport. They held the first world championships in 1990.

There are many ways to race. Some races focus on endurance. Cross-country (XC) racing uses varied paths. These paths have rocks and forest roads. XCO is a common type of XC race. It is a mass start race. Another type is the XC Marathon. These races are very tough. Riders may go over 80 km.

Other races focus on gravity. Downhill (DH) racing is a race against the clock. Riders go down steep hills. They ride over tree roots and bumps. They can reach high speeds.
