Riders race on a special track called a velodrome. These tracks have turns that slope upward. This shape helps riders keep their speed. Most modern tracks are 250 meters long.

The bikes are built for speed. They are very light and strong. These bikes have no brakes. They also have no freewheel. This means the pedals always move with the wheels.

There are two main types of races. Sprint races are short. They use raw power to win. Endurance races are much longer. They test how much a rider can go.

One cool trick is called drafting. A rider follows very close to another person. This helps them move through the air more easily. It lets them go fast with less work.

Track cycling is in the Olympic Games. Women began racing in the Olympics in 1988. Many people love watching these fast races in Europe and Japan.
