It started in Japan around 1948. Now, it is a big event in the Olympics.

In a race, riders follow a pacer. A pacer is a person on a motor or a bike. The pacer helps the racers build speed. The riders must stay behind the pacer for three laps.

The pacer leaves the track before the race ends. Then, the riders sprint as fast as they can to win. Some riders can go over 70 km per hour!

In Japan, being a pro rider takes hard work. New riders go to a special school. They must train for 15 hours every day.

Riders have different ranks based on their skill. You can tell their rank by the colors on their shorts. The best riders are in the SS class. They wear red shorts with black stripes and white stars. These top nine riders compete in the Keirin Grand Prix each year. It is a big three-day meet held in December.
