Dogs run on oval tracks. They chase a moving object called a lure. This lure is a mechanical toy on a rail.

An American named Owen Smith made this lure in 1912. He wanted to stop people from hunting rabbits. He wanted racing to be like horse racing.

Many people enjoy watching these races. People often bet money on which dog will win. This is called parimutuel betting. In the UK, many people liked the sport in the 1920s. It was a fun way to spend an evening.

Today, things are changing for the dogs. Some groups worry about how the dogs are treated. They worry about injuries and how dogs are bred. Because of this, many places are stopping the races. New Zealand and parts of the UK have passed laws to ban them. In the US, only two tracks are still open. Many dogs from racing are now sent to new homes.
