Most people in the world play sports as amateurs. Amateurs play for fun or love of the game. They do not get paid to play.

This is different from professional players. Pros get paid to train and compete. Because they do not have other jobs, they can practice all day. This helps them play at a very high level.

In the 1800s, people had strong ideas about amateur sports. Some people believed money would ruin the spirit of play. They valued the "Corinthian spirit." This means playing with honor and fair play.

A Corinthian is an athlete who values fairness above winning.

Rules have changed a lot over time. In the past, the Olympic Games only allowed amateurs. If a player took money for expenses, they could lose their medals. Now, most big games allow pros to play. Some sports, like golf and boxing, still have separate leagues for amateurs and pros. In the United States, many college athletes are amateurs. They do not get a salary, but they can get scholarships. These help pay for school, food, and housing.
