Amateur sports are games played for the love of the activity. Most people in the world participate as amateurs. They play without receiving pay for their time or training.

This is different from professional sports. Professionals receive money to compete and practice. Since they do not have other jobs, they can train full-time. This often allows them to play at a much higher level.

In the 1800s, people had very strong ideas about amateurism. Many believed that money would ruin the spirit of play. They cherished the "Corinthian spirit," which means playing with honor and fair play.

A "Corinthian" is an athlete who values fairness more than winning. The Corinthian Yacht Club was even started in Essex in 1872. Their rules said no paid hands could help steer the boats. This helped keep the focus on the skill of the amateur.

Modern organized sports began to grow in the 19th century. The United Kingdom and the United States led this growth. In those days, sports were very popular in private schools. Wealthy men often played as amateurs. Working-class people had a harder time joining in. They often worked six days every week. The Factory Act of 1844 helped by giving men a half-day off. This gave more people the chance to play.

Rules about money have caused many big changes. For a long time, the Olympic Games only allowed amateurs. In 1912, Jim Thorpe lost his medals for taking expense money. Later, some countries used "full-time amateurs." These were athletes who were officially students or soldiers. However, the state actually paid them to train all day. This made things difficult for people who paid for their own training.

Today, most major sports allow professional players to compete. Some sports like golf and boxing still keep separate leagues. In North America, many university athletes are still amateurs. They do not receive a salary for playing. Instead, they can earn athletic scholarships. These scholarships help pay for tuition, food, and housing. Some people say this helps students get a good education. Others believe the system is not fair to the players.
