One person wears red clothes if they have a higher rank. The other person wears blue clothes. This helps everyone see who is who in the ring.

This sport focuses on skill rather than just hitting hard.

Boxers win by landing clean punches to score points. A referee watches the match very closely to keep it safe. The referee makes sure all blows are legal. He uses a belt over the torso to show where low blows are not allowed. If a boxer holds their opponent too much, the referee will separate them. He must also stop the fight if a boxer is hurt or if one person is much better than the other.

Matches follow a specific set of rules and timing.

For men and women, senior bouts usually have three rounds. Each round lasts for three minutes. There is a one-minute break between each round to rest. Men's bouts changed to this three-minute format on January 1, 2009. Women's bouts changed to this same format on December 19, 2016. This is different from professional boxing where fighters rest for many months.

Amateur boxing has a long and interesting history.

It began as a sport in the mid-to-late 19th century. In 1880, twelve clubs in England formed the Amateur Boxing Association. By 1902, American boxers were already competing in their championships. Boxing first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1904. Since 1912, it has almost always been a part of the Olympics. The United States and Cuba have won the most gold medals in Olympic history.

Success in these tournaments brings many wonderful prizes.

Some winners also get cups, belts, or even miniature gloves. In the United States, many contests are called Golden Gloves. This name comes from the idea that the winner takes all. It is a way to celebrate the hard work and skill of the champions.
