It is one of two wrestling styles seen in the Olympics. The other style is called freestyle wrestling. This sport is special because it has very specific rules. Wrestlers are not allowed to grab or hold anyone below the waist.

Because they cannot use their legs to trip an opponent, they must use big throws. This makes the sport very exciting to watch. Athletes use great strength and skill to turn their opponent's shoulders to the mat.

In a big tournament, there is a clear way the matches work. First, all the wrestlers must weigh in to make sure they are in the right size group.

They then draw a number to see when they will compete. The matches usually follow a system called direct elimination. This means if you lose, you might be out of the tournament. However, some wrestlers get a second chance in a special round called a repechage. This round is for those who lost to the two best wrestlers. Finally, the winners of the main matches face off in the finals. The top winners receive gold, silver, or bronze medals.

The history of this sport is very long and interesting. Some people think it comes from the ancient Greek Olympics. The name "Greco-Roman" was chosen to connect it to those ancient values.

A soldier named Jean Exbrayat is said to have developed this style. He used to perform at fairs and called it "flat hand wrestling." He made the rule in 1848 that no holds could be below the waist. Later, an Italian wrestler named Basilio Bartoletti gave it its modern name. This helped people see it as a prestigious and classic sport.

Greco-Roman wrestling has been in every summer Olympic Games since 1904. It was even in the very first modern Olympics in 1896. In the past, professional matches were much longer and tougher than they are now. One match in the 1912 Olympics lasted eleven hours and forty minutes!

Today, the rules keep the athletes safe from harm. Many countries have had great success in the Olympics. Sweden and Russia have many famous champions. For example, Carl Westergren from Sweden won three gold medals. Alexander Karelin also won three gold medals for his country.

You might know other sports that use weight classes to keep things fair. Just like in boxing, wrestlers only fight people of a similar size. This ensures the competition is about skill rather than just being bigger. The sport also has different groups for different ages. There are categories for young people like U15 and U17. There are also categories for adults called Seniors. Whether it is a small local match or the huge Olympics, the goal is the same. It is about showing great skill on the mat.
