sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The discus throw is a thrilling track and field event. Athletes try to throw a heavy disc as far as they can. This sport is very old and has deep roots in history. It was part of the ancient Greek pentathlon starting around 708 BC. You can even see it in famous art like the Discobolus statue.

People have admired the skill of throwers for thousands of years.

To perform a throw, an athlete follows a specific set of steps. They start inside a concrete circle that is recessed into the ground. The thrower usually begins by facing away from the direction of the throw. They spin anticlockwise to build up momentum and power. This movement must be smooth to maintain perfect balance.

Finally, they release the discus so it lands within a wide, wedge-shaped area.

Learning the right technique is a hard job that takes many years. The first modern athlete to use a full body spin was František Janda-Suk. He was from Bohemia and studied ancient statues to find his method. After working on his technique for a year, he won a silver medal in 1900.

Today, most top throwers are 30 years old or even older because the skill is so difficult.

Every discus is built to help it fly through the air. Most have sides made of plastic, wood, or metal. They also have a metal core and a smooth metal rim. A heavier rim helps the disc stay stable while it spins.

The weight of the disc changes based on the athlete. For example, professional men throw a 2 kg disc. Women in professional competitions use a 1 kg disc.
