Decathlon

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The decathlon is a massive test of skill in athletics. It combines ten different track and field events into one competition. Athletes compete over two long days to show what they can do. They do not just win by being the first to cross a line. Instead, they use a special points system to track their performance. Each event gives points based on how well an athlete performs. The person with the highest total score at the end wins.

On the first day, athletes face five intense events. They start with a fast 100 metres sprint. Next, they try the long jump and the shot put throw. They follow this with the high jump and a 400 metres run. The second day brings five more challenges. Athletes run 110 metre hurdles and perform the discus throw. They also try the pole vault and the javelin throw. The entire competition ends with a 1500 metres run.

This sport has a very long history. It grew from the ancient Greek pentathlon. That old competition happened in Olympia starting in 708 BC. It used only five events like the long jump and wrestling. Later, a similar event called the "all-around" appeared in 1884. This competition was held at the United States amateur championships. The modern decathlon we see today first appeared at the 1912 Olympics.

Winning a decathlon is a huge honor. People often call the winner the "World's Greatest Athlete." This title began during the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. King Gustav V of Sweden said this to Jim Thorpe. Thorpe had just won the decathlon that year. Today, the world record is held by Kevin Mayer. He is an athlete from France. He scored 9126 points in 2018 at the Décastar in France.

There are different ways to compete in these events. Women often compete in the heptathlon, which has seven events. However, some women's decathlons do exist. Austra Skujytė from Lithuania holds the women's world record with 8358 points. In Masters athletics, older athletes compete using special age grades. This helps them stay competitive even as they get older. Some athletes even try a one-hour decathlon. In this version, they must start the last event within sixty minutes.
