Decathlon

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The decathlon is a big test of skill. It has ten parts. These parts include running, jumping, and throwing. Athletes do these tasks over two days.

On day one, they run the 100 metres and 400 metres. They also do the long jump, shot put, and high jump. On day two, they run the 110 metre hurdles. They also do the discus throw, pole vault, and javelin throw. The last event is the 1500 metre run.

Winners are not just the first ones to finish. They earn points for each event. A points system tracks how well they do. The person with the most points wins.

Winning a decathlon is a very big deal. People often call the winner the "World's Greatest Athlete." This name began in 1912. A king from Sweden said it to Jim Thorpe. Thorpe won the decathlon at the Olympics that year.

Today, Kevin Mayer holds the world record. He is from France. He scored 9126 points in 2018. It is a hard way to show strength.
