Brazilian jiu-jitsu

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Brazilian jiu-jitsu, or BJJ, is a unique martial art and combat sport. It focuses on grappling and fighting on the ground. Instead of using punches, practitioners use holds to control an opponent. The main goal is to reach a dominant position. From there, they use joint locks or chokeholds to win. This system is special because it helps smaller people. A smaller person can defend against a much larger opponent. They do this by using leverage and weight distribution.

Training in BJJ involves many specific steps and methods. Students often practice "rolling," which is another word for sparring. They also use live drilling to learn new moves. You can practice in a traditional uniform called a gi. Some people choose to train "no-gi" instead. In no-gi training, people wear tight shirts called rash guards. The art emphasizes the "guard" as a central way to fight. Practitioners work hard to secure positions like the "back mount."

History shows how this art traveled across the world. In 1906, Japanese masters held matches in Manaus, Brazil. Later, a man named Mitsuyo Maeda arrived in Brazil in 1914. He taught his skills to the Gracie family. Carlos Gracie was one of the first students. His brother, Hélio Gracie, helped change the art forever. Because Hélio had a smaller build, he could not use big throws. He focused on ground fighting to make the art more effective.

There are many different paths and schools within the sport. The Gracie family is very famous for spreading the art. Another important path came from Luiz França and Oswaldo Fadda. Fadda's students were very good at using footlocks. Today, many famous teams exist, such as Gracie Barra and Alliance Jiu Jitsu. There are also many belt colors to show skill. These include white, blue, purple, brown, and black belts.

BJJ is now a huge part of modern mixed martial arts. It became very famous in the United States through the UFC. A fighter named Royce Gracie won many early tournaments. He showed that BJJ could work against much larger fighters. Today, people practice BJJ for many different reasons. They use it for physical fitness and to build character. For many, it is even a way of life.
