sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sambo is a fascinating martial art and combat sport. It is often called a mixed martial art because it uses many different styles. People use moves from boxing, judo, and several types of wrestling. The name itself is an acronym. It literally means "self-defence without weapons."

This art is practiced all over the world today. It helps people learn how to move and defend themselves. Many people love it for the skill and strength it requires.

There are several ways to practice sambo. In sport sambo, athletes focus on wrestling. They wear a special jacket called a kurtka. This jacket looks like clothing worn by people in the Caucasus region. Athletes use throws, pins, and leg locks to win matches.

Combat sambo is quite different from the sport version. It is more like modern mixed martial arts. It allows striking, such as punches, kicks, and even headbutts. To stay safe, combat sambo players wear gloves and headgear.

Sambo has a very interesting history. It began in the Soviet Union during the early 1920s. The Red Army wanted to improve how their soldiers fought hand-to-hand. Two important men helped create it. Vasili Oshchepkov was a trained military officer. He even lived in Japan to study judo. Viktor Spiridonov was another founder. He was a military officer who knew many wrestling styles. Spiridonov used movement instead of just strength because of old injuries.

These founders did not work together at first. Instead, their students and military staff combined their ideas. They studied many different fighting systems from around the world. Anatoly Kharlampiev was a student of Oshchepkov. He is often called the "father of sambo." This is because he helped make it an official sport. On November 16, 1938, the USSR All-Union Sports Committee officially recognized it. Since then, it has grown into a global sport.

Today, sambo links many different traditions together. It connects Japanese judo with various types of wrestling. Some styles are even made for specific groups. For example, special sambo was made for Army Special Forces. There is even a version called beach sambo. This version is practiced on soft sand at the beach. Whether in a ring or on sand, sambo shows how different skills can become one system.
