It helps people become strong, flexible, and balanced. Many people call it a mind-body exercise. This means you must pay close attention to your thoughts and your movements at the same time. It is not a cardio workout like running. Instead, it focuses on building strength and control. As of 2023, over 12 million people around the world practice Pilates.

\n\nThis way of moving works by focusing on your core. The core is the group of muscles in your abdomen, your low back, and your hips. Some people call this area the \"powerhouse.\" Using your powerhouse helps you stay steady and stable. During a lesson, you do a few repetitions of low-impact exercises. Low-impact means the moves are gentle on your joints. You can do these moves using just your body on a mat. You can also use special machines to help you.

\n\nJoseph Pilates created this method a long time ago. He was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany. He found inspiration for his work during World War I. He was staying at the Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man. He spent four years there working with other people. He wanted to create a system to strengthen both the mind and the body. He believed that being healthy in your mind helps your body stay healthy too. He originally called his method Contrology.

\n\nJoseph Pilates also invented many tools called apparatuses. One famous machine is the Reformer, or the Universal Reformer. These machines have moving bases and adjustable resistance. Resistance is a force that makes it harder to move. Other machines include the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, and the Ladder Barrel. He wrote two books about his ideas. One was published in 1934, and the other was in 1945.

\n\nToday, there are many different styles of Pilates. Some people teach \"Contrology,\" which is the exact original way. Others teach \"Classical Pilates," which includes small changes to the moves. Many people now practice "Contemporary Pilates." This style uses new ideas and different equipment. Some people even mix Pilates with other activities. They might try Yogilates or AquaPilates. This shows how much the method has grown since Joseph Pilates first started it.",
