Some things in our world are too heavy to move by hand.

We use lifting equipment to help us move these loads. This gear is for lifting things up and down. It is not for moving things sideways. It is also not for just holding things up. This equipment is used in many places. You might see it in a warehouse. It is also needed for building bridges or tall buildings.

There are many different ways this gear works. Some tools are huge machines. You might see an overhead crane or a forklift. There are also patient lifts and building cradles. Some tools are much smaller. These include items like chains, hooks, and rope. These tools help people move many packages at once. This means fewer people are needed to move goods.

Using heavy machines can be very dangerous. If a machine fails, it can cause a bad injury. Because of this, many countries have strict safety rules. These rules are often part of big debates about labor laws. In the United States, an group called OSHA sets the rules. They make sure contractors follow strict safety steps. All machines must be made by a certified engineer.

Different countries have their own ways to keep workers safe. In the United Kingdom, the HSE sets the rules. They use the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations. These rules say the equipment must be right for the job. The gear must also be registered on a special form. It must be checked often to stay safe. Workers must also plan how to use the gear carefully.

Every piece of gear has a special limit for weight. This is called a working load limit, or WLL. Some people call it a safe working load. To find the WLL, we use a math step. We take the minimum breaking load of the gear. Then we divide that number by a safety factor. The minimum breaking load is how much weight breaks the tool. This limit helps stop the equipment from failing.
