Lifting equipment

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Lifting equipment, often called lifting gear, is a vital category of tools. These tools are designed to lift and lower heavy loads. This equipment is essential because many objects are too heavy for manual labor. Humans use this gear to move materials that people cannot move by hand.

It is also used to move many packages at once. This allows fewer people to move a large amount of goods. Lifting equipment must perform vertical movement. It is not used for horizontal movement across a floor. It is also not considered lifting equipment if it is only designed to support a load.

There are many different types of lifting equipment used in various industries. Some types are massive pieces of heavy machinery. Examples include overhead cranes and forklifts used in large spaces. You might also see passenger lifts or building cradles on construction sites. Other machinery includes jacks and specialized patient lifts for medical use.

Smaller accessories are also part of this category. These include simple items like chains, hooks, and rope. These tools are common in many work environments. You will find them in warehouses or on major construction projects like bridges.

Because these machines are powerful, they can be very dangerous. The failure or misuse of heavy machinery can cause severe or even fatal injuries. This danger makes lifting equipment a major subject in global labor law debates. Most countries have established strict safety regulations to protect workers. These rules often require that only certified workers operate the machinery. This helps to limit the chance of workplace injuries occurring during a job.

Different nations manage these safety rules in different ways. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, sets the regulations. Contractors in the U.S. must follow very strict rules to ensure safety. All machinery must be developed by a certified engineer. Additionally, contractors must follow all manufacturer procedures. Users must also be professionally trained before they operate any equipment. Regular inspections are required to keep the machines in good working order.

In the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety Executive, or HSE, manages the rules. They use a specific set of rules called the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations. These regulations require that all equipment is adequate for the specific task. The gear must also be registered on a Statutory Inspection Report Form. Routine inspections are mandatory to ensure the machines remain safe. Finally, the use of the equipment must be properly planned out before work begins.

To prevent equipment failure, every piece of gear has a weight limit. This is known as the working load limit, or WLL. Some people use the term safe working load, or SWL. However, the term WLL is often preferred over SWL. This is because the word "safe" might suggest a guarantee that cannot be made. The concept of a working load limit is not just for lifting. It is also used for mooring ropes on ships.

Calculating the working load limit involves a specific mathematical process. First, you must identify the minimum breaking load of the equipment. This is also called the minimum breaking strength or minimum breaking force. This number represents the amount of weight that will cause the equipment to break. To find the WLL, you divide the minimum breaking load by a safety factor. Usually, the working load limit of ropes is much smaller than their minimum breaking load. This mathematical buffer helps ensure the equipment does not reach its breaking point during use.
