You can use it to dig into the earth. It is also great for lifting and moving heavy things. People use shovels to move soil, coal, gravel, or sand. You might even use one to clear away snow.

Because they are so useful, they are found in many places. Farmers use them in agriculture every day. Archaeologists use them to find things buried under the dirt.

Most hand shovels work in a very simple way.

They have a strong blade attached to a handle. The blade is often made of sheet steel or hard plastic. The handle is usually made of wood or fiberglass. Some handles use ash or maple wood. To help you grip the tool, a T-piece is often on the end. This helps you control the shovel when moving heavy material. Some steel blades have a folded seam to make a socket. This fold also makes the blade very strong and stiff.

People have been digging for a very long time.

In the Neolithic age, people used animal bones. They used a large shoulder blade as a crude shovel. Later, people built tools just for digging. In the 1890s and 1910s, a man named Frederick Winslow Taylor studied shoveling. He wanted to find the best way to work. He looked at the motions people made while shoveling. He believed that different materials needed different shaped scoops. This helped workers be much more productive at their jobs.

There are many special types of shovels to know.

A coal shovel has a wide, flat blade. A snow shovel might have a very wide blade to push snow. Some shovels look like big spoons. These are called spoon shovels and help dig deep, narrow holes.

In the past, large groups of workers were called labor gangs. They would shovel coal or gravel by hand for many hours. Now, we often use big machines instead. These include front-end loaders and excavators. These machines can do the work of many people very quickly. Even though they are different, they serve the same purpose as a hand shovel. They dig, lift, and move materials from one place to another.
