A hoe is a very useful tool for working with the earth.

People use it to shape soil and grow food. It helps farmers remove weeds from their gardens. It can also be used to harvest root crops like potatoes. Some hoes are even used by archaeologists to clean large areas. These experts use them to find old things in the ground. The hoe is much faster than a small trowel.

There are two main ways a hoe works. The first way is with a draw hoe. This tool has a blade set at a right angle to the handle. You chop the blade into the ground and pull it toward you. This action helps you make narrow rows called drills. You can also use it to pile soil around plant bases. This is called hilling. The second way uses a scuffle hoe to weed.

Scuffle hoes work by scraping the surface of the soil. A Dutch hoe has a sharp blade on every side. You push the handle to move the blade forward through the dirt. This cuts the roots of weeds just under the surface. Another kind is the hoop hoe, which has a loop-shaped blade. You push and pull this blade to cut weeds in loose soil. It is very effective at keeping a garden clean.

Hoes have been around for a very long time. They are even older than the plough. In ancient Sumerian stories, a god named Enlil invented the hoe. There is even an old poem where a hoe debates a plough. The hoe actually wins that debate! Many different people have made special hoes over the years. Hans Rasmussen invented the curved blade for the hoedad tool.

Many different types of hoes exist for specific jobs. The ridging hoe is shaped like a heart to dig trenches. A flower hoe has a tiny blade for working near delicate roots. Some hoes even have wheels to help them move across a field. A famous man named Jethro Tull used horse hoes in his books. These tools helped farming become much more productive. Using the right hoe makes gardening a much easier job.
