People use them for physical therapy, sports training, and general fitness. You might hear them called many names. Some people call them stability balls, yoga balls, or gym balls. Others use names like Pilates balls or Swiss balls. These balls are made of soft, elastic material. They are filled with air to make them round. You can change the air pressure by using a valve stem. This lets you fill the ball or let air out.

Using a ball is different than using a flat floor. The ball creates an unstable surface for your body. This means you must work hard to stay balanced. This type of movement is called unstable training. When you try to stay steady, your muscles work harder. This helps your core muscles, like your stomach and back, get stronger.

For example, doing a push-up on a ball uses more muscle units. It also helps your body become better at resisting injury. Some people even use them for weight training with dumbbells.

The history of the Swiss Ball began in 1963. An Italian man named Aquilino Cosani created it. He was a manufacturer who worked with plastics. He found a way to make large balls that were puncture-resistant. Later, doctors began using these balls for therapy. A British physiotherapist named Mary Quinton used them for newborn babies. In Switzerland, Dr. Susanne Klein-Vogelbach used them for neuro-developmental treatment. She even wrote a famous book about ball gymnastics in 1985. This book helped show how adults could use balls for medical problems.

There are many amazing records involving these balls. A man from Australia named Neil Whyte set several world records. In 2016, he jumped across ten Swiss balls in 7.8 seconds. He did this in Beijing, China. In 2011, he also did 31 push-ups on four balls in one minute. He even set a record for the furthest jump between two balls. That jump was 2.3 meters long in 2006. These feats show just how much skill it takes to use the ball.

Exercise balls are used in many parts of life. Some people use a large version called a birth ball. This can help a woman feel more comfortable during labor. It can also help the baby move into the right position. You can also find these balls in special games. In a sport called Treibball, people use eight exercise balls. In that game, the balls are called "rolling sheep."
