The ball has a fuzzy surface called felt. This felt is a mix of wool, nylon, and cotton. It covers a rubber core to help the ball fly through the air. The felt helps reduce drag so the ball moves better.

Making a tennis ball involves many careful steps. First, a rubber core is made. In the past, makers cut rubber sheets into clover shapes. Today, they join two halves together to make the walls even.

Inside the ball, there is a mix of nitrogen and oxygen. This gas creates pressure to make the ball bouncy. To keep them fresh, balls are kept in pressurized cans. When you open a can, the air inside starts to push out. This causes the ball to lose its bounce over time.

Tennis balls have a very long and strange history.

In the 1400s, King Louis XI of France said balls should be made of leather and wool. Earlier versions were quite different. Some Scottish makers used the stomach of a sheep or goat. Others used animal fur, rope, or even pine wood. In the 1600s, some balls were even made using human hair and putty.

There are many rules for how a ball must work. The International Tennis Federation, or ITF, sets these rules. They decide the official size and weight for a ball.

For example, a ball is tested by dropping it onto concrete. If it bounces between 53 and 59 centimeters, it is good. The ITF also makes special balls to help people learn. Red balls are the slowest and are made of foam or are very soft. Orange balls are normal size but have no pressure. Green balls are the fastest of the three.

We see tennis balls in many parts of our world.

About 325 million balls are made every single year. This creates a lot of rubber waste that does not break down easily. Some people find clever ways to reuse them. At the Wimbledon tournament, old balls are recycled for tiny animals. They become homes for the Eurasian harvest mouse. You can also find tennis balls mentioned in famous plays by William Shakespeare. They have been a part of stories for hundreds of years.
