sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A football is the round object used in the sport of association football. It is a very important tool for the game. The ball must have a specific shape, size, and weight. These rules are kept by the International Football Association Board. Groups like FIFA also set strict standards for match balls.

Most modern balls use a special design. They have 32 panels made of shapes called pentagons and hexagons. This shape is called a truncated icosahedron. This design makes the ball look very round. It has become a famous symbol for the sport.

Making a modern football is a careful process. Inside the ball, there is a bladder made of latex or butyl rubber. This bladder is filled with air to create pressure. The outside is made of materials like leather or synthetic plastic. The surface can be textured or embossed to help players touch the ball better.

To put the pieces together, makers use different methods. Some balls are stitched by hand or machine. Other balls use thermo-bonding, which means they are glued together with heat. This helps keep water out so the ball does not get too heavy.

Footballs have changed a lot over many centuries. In medieval times, people used leather shells filled with cork shavings. Some used animal bladders to hold air, but these were easy to pop. In 1838, Charles Goodyear introduced vulcanized rubber. This was a way to treat rubber to make it strong and stretchy. It also helped the ball work well in mud or rain. Later, in 1931, three men in Argentina patented a ball without a leather lace. This new design was called the Superball.

History shows how much the game depends on the ball. In the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, teams had to agree on a ball. Argentina and Uruguay could not agree during the final match. They used Argentina's "Tiento" ball for the first half. They used a T-model ball for the second half.

Since 1970, the company Adidas has supplied official match balls for every tournament. Most of these balls are made in Sialkot, Pakistan. About 70% of all footballs in the world come from that city.

Today, technology is making footballs even smarter. Some balls now have tiny microchips hidden inside them. In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, a chip helped connect the ball to a smartphone. For the 2026 World Cup, Adidas will use a chip system to help referees. This helps speed up the video assistant referee, or VAR, system.

Scientists even study how air moves around the seams of a ball. This helps makers prevent unpredictable movements during a big game.
