It can be strapped to the wrist or forearm. Shields help people block attacks from weapons. They can stop close weapons like spears. They can also stop long-range weapons like arrows. Some shields are large panels that cover the whole body. Other shields are small models called bucklers. These small shields are for hand-to-hand combat.

Shields also come in many different thicknesses. Some are thick wood to stop heavy bolts. Others are thin and light to deflect blades.

Shields have many different shapes and sizes. They can be round, oval, square, or even triangular. Some shapes are better for soldiers on foot. Other shapes work better for soldiers on horses.

In the past, people made shields from many things. They used wood, animal hide, or woven reeds. Some even used wicker or turtle shells. In the Middle Ages, people used split-resistant timber. They often covered the wood with leather or rawhide. Many shields had a metal part called a boss. This boss was a center piece used to block hits. It could even be used to punch an opponent.

History shows us many types of shields.

The first shields likely appeared in the Late Neolithic Age. The oldest ones that still exist are from the Bronze Age. In Ancient Greece, soldiers used a round shield called an aspis. This shield was made of wood and reinforced with bronze. The Spartans used these to form a group called a phalanx. This helped protect their comrades to their left. Roman soldiers used large oval or rectangular shields called scuta. They used them to make a protective box called a testudo.

Different cultures created very special shields.

In the Middle Ages, the Normans used kite shields. These were rounded at the top and helped protect a rider's legs. Later, shields became smaller as body armor improved. In Africa, Zulu warriors used large Ishlangu shields. These were made from a single ox hide. They used these shields with a short spear called an iklwa. The Igbo people in Nigeria used woven palm stems. They had large wooden shields for homes and light wicker shields for battle. These shields showed the identity of a tribe.

Shields have changed a lot over time.

Even after guns were invented, some people still used shields. Scottish Highland fighters used small shields called targes in the 18th century. Some Zulu warriors used them in the 19th century too. Today, shields are used by police and military units. They help during hostage rescues or riot control. Many shields are now used for art or ceremonies. They represent a person's culture and heritage. They remain important symbols of identity and strength.
