An oar is a special tool used to move a boat through water.

It is a long pole with a flat blade at one end. A rower holds the handle at the other end. Oars are different from paddles because oars are attached to the boat. They stay in place using a pivot point called an oarlock or a thole. This connection allows the oar to move while staying attached to the vessel. This tool has helped people travel on water for a very long time.

To move the boat, a rower follows a specific way of working.

Rowers usually face the back of the boat, which is called the stern. They reach back and put the flat blade into the water. As they lean back toward the front of the boat, the blade pivots in the oarlock. This movement pushes the blade through the water to create forward thrust. The rower pulls on the short end of the oar to make the long end move. This simple step turns human strength into boat movement.

People have used oars for thousands of years.

Archaeologists found wooden oars at a Hemudu culture site in Yuyao, China. These oars are very old, dating from 5000 to 4500 BC. In 1999, another oar was found in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. That oar was about 63.4 centimeters long and came from 4000 BC. In ancient times, large warships used very long oars. Some of these oars were more than twelve meters long.

Oars work using science called levers.

A lever is a tool that uses a pivot point to move things. From the rower's view, the oar is a Class I lever. The oarlock is the pivot, the rower pulls the handle, and the blade moves the other way. From the shore, it looks like a Class II lever. In this view, the blade in the water is the pivot. Competitive rowing rules define oars as Class II levers. This helps rowers learn to move the boat past the blade.

Oars have changed a lot over time.

Traditional oars were made of wood with a long shaft called a loom. Modern racing oars are often made of carbon fibre. These are usually 250 to 300 centimeters long. Some oars are even used as trophies for winning races. A club might paint an oar with its colors and write the race details on the blade. You can even see oars in the coat of arms for places like Enonkoski in Norway.
