A paddle steamer is a special kind of boat. It uses a steam engine to turn a large wheel. This wheel is called a paddle wheel.

The wheel has many flat blades on its edge. These blades are called floats or buckets. When the engine spins the wheel, the blades push against the water. This creates thrust to move the boat.

Some wheels use a feathering method to work better. This keeps the blades vertical while they are under the water. This helps the boat move more efficiently.

There are three main ways to build these boats. Sidewheelers have one large wheel on each side of the ship. These boats are very good at turning in winding rivers.

Sternwheelers have only one wheel at the very back. These were very common on the Mississippi River in North America.

Some boats use an inboard design. This means the wheel is tucked inside the hull. This protects the wheel from hitting things in narrow water. These boats can spin the wheel very fast to turn quickly.

People have used paddle wheels for a very long time. The Roman engineer Vitruvius wrote about them in the past.

In the 1500s, a Spanish engineer named Blasco de Garay built ships with manual paddles. One ship, the La Trinidad, was very fast in 1543. Later, Marquis Claude de Jouffroy built the first real paddle steamer in France in 1774.

Robert Fulton's Clermont was a big success in New York in 1807.

In the United States, Captain Henry Shreve made better boats for the Mississippi River. Because of him, river landings grew from 21 in 1814 to over 1,200 by 1833. One large sternwheeler named the Sprague was built in 1901. She carried coal and oil until 1948.

Today, we do not use steam to power most big ships. Most modern boats use a screw propeller instead.

However, you can still see paddle wheels in fun places. Some boats are used as floating restaurants or casinos.
