A paddle steamer is a boat moved by a paddle wheel.

An engine spins a large wheel. This wheel has flat blades called floats or buckets. As the wheel turns, these blades push against the water. This push makes the boat move forward or backward.

There are three main types of these boats. Sidewheelers have one wheel on each side. These boats can turn well in winding rivers. Sternwheelers have just one wheel at the back. These were very popular on the Mississippi River.

Some boats use an inboard design. This means the wheel is tucked inside the hull. This helps protect the wheel from damage.

Some wheels use a feathering method. This is a way to make the wheel work better. It keeps the blades straight while they are under water. In the past, many boats used paddles. Some were even moved by people or animals. Today, many paddle boats are used for fun. You might see them as floating restaurants or small pedal boats.
