A propeller is a tool with spinning blades.

It has a center part called a hub. The blades grow out from this hub. They are set at an angle. When they spin, they push against water or air. This push is called thrust. This thrust moves a boat or a plane forward.

Propellers have a long history. Long ago, people used water screws to lift water.

A famous man named Archimedes used a screw to move water for farms. Later, inventors tried using screws to move ships. In 1775, David Bushnell used a propeller on a submarine. It was called the Turtle. It was the first submarine used in a battle.

In 1835, two men worked on better propellers. Francis Pettit Smith and John Ericsson both made plans for them. Smith built a boat with a wooden propeller. At first, it had two turns. Then it broke and had only one turn. This change made the boat go much faster! Smith used this new design on a ship called Archimedes. This ship helped show the world how well propellers work.
