A screw is a clever simple machine. It changes a turning motion into a straight motion.

Most screws have a round shaft. This shaft has ridges called threads. These threads wrap around the shaft in a spiral shape. You can think of a screw as a ramp wrapped around a cylinder.

When you turn a screw, it moves along its axis. This happens because the threads mesh with a hole or a nut. A small turning force can create a very large push. This is called mechanical advantage. The closer the threads are, the more power you gain. The distance between threads is called the pitch. The distance a screw moves in one full turn is called the lead.

Most screws are right-handed. This means they tighten when you turn them clockwise. This is easier for most people. Some special tools use left-handed threads. For example, the left pedal on a bike is left-handed. Screws are used in many ways. They hold things together with bolts. They also lift heavy loads with screw jacks.
