A wedge works by moving force. You push on the blunt, flat end. This moves the force to the sharp point. This helps you do work with less effort. This is called mechanical advantage.

The shape of the wedge matters a lot. A long wedge with a narrow angle is helpful. It makes splitting much easier. A short wedge with a wide angle works faster. But it needs more force to use.

People have used wedges for a very long time. Early humans made them from stone.

They used flint to make sharp edges. Later, people used bronze or wood. In Egypt, workers used bronze wedges to break stone. Some used wooden wedges soaked in water. The wood would swell and break the stone.

We see wedges everywhere today. Knives and axes are types of wedges. Even a nail or a fork is a wedge. They help us cut or split things easily.
