You might see it as a triangle shape. A wedge can do many different jobs. It can separate two objects from each other. It can also lift a heavy object up. Some wedges even hold an object in place.

This makes the wedge a very important tool for many tasks.

How does a wedge work? It works by moving force from one place to another. You apply force to the blunt, flat end. This force travels to the pointy, sharp end. The wedge turns that force into two new forces. These new forces push outward against the sides of the object.

This process is called mechanical advantage. A long, narrow wedge provides a large mechanical advantage. A short, wide wedge works faster but needs more force. This helps you split things with much less effort.

People have used wedges for thousands of years. The exact beginning of the wedge is unknown. Early humans made them by chipping stone. They often used a stone called flint.

This created a sharp edge called a bifacial edge. In ancient Egypt, workers used bronze wedges. They used them to break stone for buildings. Some people even used wooden wedges. They soaked the wood in water to make it swell. This swelling helped break the stone apart.

There are many specific types of wedges. A narrow wedge used for small adjustments is called a gib.

You can find wedges in many common items. The tips of nails and forks are wedges. They split the material as you push them in. A blade is actually a compound inclined plane. This means it is two inclined planes joined together. Knives, axes, and even saws use this shape. Drill bits also use sharpened edges to work.

We see the work of wedges every day. A plow uses a wedge shape to separate soil. Scissors use wedges to separate fabric.

You might even use a wedge at home. A door wedge holds a door open. It works because of friction between the door and the floor. This friction helps the wedge stay in place. Even engine parts and bicycle parts use wedges. It is a simple shape that does huge work.
