A plane is a special tool used to shape wood.

It helps workers flatten boards and make them smooth. You can also use it to make wood a certain thickness. Some planes are small for fine work. Others are large for bigger tasks. These tools help turn rough lumber into beautiful pieces of furniture.

How does a plane work? It uses muscle power to move a sharp metal blade over wood. This blade is called a cutter. The cutter sticks out below the bottom of the tool, which is called the sole.

As you move the plane, the cutter slices off thin pieces of wood. These thin pieces are called shavings. A long, flat sole helps the tool ride on the high spots of the wood. This ensures only the highest parts are cut away. After a few passes, the surface becomes flat and smooth.

Planes have been used for thousands of years.

The earliest known examples were found in Pompeii. Other Roman planes have been found in Britain and Germany.

Ancient planes were often made of wood. They used a wooden wedge to hold the metal blade in place. In the mid-1860s, Leonard Bailey made metal planes with cast iron bodies. His designs became the basis for most modern metal planes. Today, companies like Stanley Black & Decker still make them.

There are many different kinds of planes for different jobs.

A block plane is small and fits in one hand. It is great for smoothing small pieces or edges. Bench planes are larger and often have a handle called a tote.

You might use a scrub plane to remove large amounts of wood quickly. A jointer plane is much longer and helps flatten large boards. Even specialized tools like the router plane exist to clean out grooves.

Some planes are even tiny, like finger planes for small toy parts.

Planing is a skill that connects the past to the present. For many centuries, skilled people did all this work by hand. Today, we have large machines like thicknessers that use electric motors. These machines can make a board smooth on all four sides very quickly. However, many people still love using hand planes for fine details. In Japan, workers use a different style. Instead of pushing the plane away, they pull it toward their body.
