People use them to ride on flat ground or down hills. You can move by pushing with one foot. The other foot stays balanced on the wooden deck. Some riders use a bowl or a half pipe to move. They do this by pumping their legs for speed. If your left foot is in front, you ride "regular." If your right foot is in front, you ride "goofy."

Building a skateboard involves many specific parts. The deck is often made of seven or eight layers of maple wood.

Four wheels are attached to the bottom using metal parts called trucks. These trucks have a hanger and a baseplate. A kingpin joins them to help the board turn. Inside each wheel, two small ball bearings help it spin. Most bearings are made of steel. Some use a high-tech ceramic called silicon nitride. You can even use a special tool to fix them.

Skateboarding has a very interesting history. It likely began in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Surfers in California wanted to ride when waves were flat. They called this early version "sidewalk surfing." The first boards were handmade from wooden planks and roller skate wheels. People even used wooden boxes for boards. By 1959, companies began making them in factories. This helped the sport grow and spread quickly.

There are many different types of boards to choose from.

Longboards are very long and good for high speeds. Shortboards are often used for tricks. Some small plastic boards are called "penny" boards. Larger ones are sometimes called "nickel" boards. Most standard boards are called "popsicle" decks. These usually measure about 32.475 inches long. Wheels can be small, around 48mm, or large, over 60mm. Larger wheels are better for long distances.

Skateboarding has changed a lot over the years. Since 1987, it has become part of mainstream culture. Films, media, and video games helped many people learn about it. More money has gone into making better boards and skate parks. This constant interest helps companies invent new things. The sport even appeared in the 2020 Summer Olympics. It is a way for people to show skill and creativity.
