A skateboard is a board with wheels.

People use them for sport and fun. Surfers in California first used them. They wanted to ride when waves were flat. They called it "sidewalk surfing."

Most boards have a wooden deck. The deck is often made of maple wood. To move, you push with one foot. You keep the other foot on the board. You can also ride down a hill. If your left foot is in front, you ride "regular." If your right foot is in front, you ride "goofy."

Four wheels are on the board. They are made of a material called polyurethane. Small wheels are light and good for tricks. Large wheels help you go fast.

Metal parts called trucks hold the wheels to the deck. They have a part called a kingpin. You can tighten it to help the board turn. Inside each wheel are two small metal parts. We call these ball bearings. They help the wheels spin well. Skateboarding even appeared in the 2020 Olympics!
