People use skateboards to do tricks or travel. It began in the United States. Surfers in California first used them. They called it "sidewalk surfing." They wanted to move like surfers when waves were flat.

Early boards were just wooden boxes with roller skate wheels. Later, people made better wheels from a material called polyurethane. These new wheels helped skaters ride with more control.

In the 1970s, skaters found new places to ride. They used empty swimming pools to skate on walls. This was called "vert" skating. People also made special ramps at home. Some skaters even rode very fast in races.

Today, skateboarding is a big sport. It was part of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Millions of people around the world are active skateboarders. It is a way to show skill and have fun together.
