Logging is the way people cut and move trees.

We use wood for many things. It helps us build houses. It also makes paper.

There are different ways to do this work. One way is called clearcutting. This is when workers remove almost all trees in an area. Another way is selective logging. This means workers only cut some trees.

In the past, people used rivers to move logs. This was called log driving. Today, we use big machines. We use diesel trucks and chainsaws. Some workers even use helicopters to move wood.

Logging is a very dangerous job. Workers use heavy tools on steep ground. They must watch for "widowmakers." These are loose branches that might fall. Logging can also change the forest. It can release carbon dioxide into the air. This happens when tree parts are burned for power. This power is called biomass. It comes from living things like plants.
