sports Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Skateboarding is much more than just a way to get around. It is an action sport, a fun hobby, and even a form of art. People use skateboards to perform amazing tricks or simply to travel from place to place. It has also become a huge part of the entertainment industry. Today, the skateboarding market is worth about $4.8 billion every year. There are over 11 million active skateboarders in the world.

This sport is so popular that it was included in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It also appeared in the 2024 Olympic games.

Learning to skate involves using a board with wheels to move. Early boards were very simple and basic. They were often just wooden boxes with roller skate wheels attached to the bottom. Later, boards became flat planks similar to the decks used today. In the 1970s, a new material called polyurethane changed everything. Frank Nasworthy created Cadillac Wheels using this material. These wheels provided much better traction and control for the rider.

This allowed skaters to perform much more difficult moves.

Skateboarding began in the United States many years ago. It likely started in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Surfers in California wanted something to do when the ocean waves were flat. They called this new activity "sidewalk surfing." They tried to mimic the style and moves of surfing while on land.

Early skaters even practiced their moves while barefoot. Some surf shops, like one in Los Angeles, began ordering manufactured boards. In 1963, Larry Stevenson held one of the first big exhibitions in Hermosa Beach, California.

As the sport grew, new styles and places appeared. In the 1970s, skaters began using empty swimming pools to ride on vertical walls. This was known as "vert" skating. Skaters like the Z-Boys became very famous during this era. They brought a new style based on Hawaiian surfing.

During the 1970s, many large skateparks were also built for the public. Some skaters even competed in speed runs in Signal Hill, California. These riders reached speeds of over 30 miles per hour. This earned them spots in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Skateboarding connects to many other things you might know. It shares a history with surfing and even appears in old cartoons. For example, Wile E. Coyote rode a skateboard in two Road Runner cartoons in 1965. It also links to modern street culture and professional sports. Many people now use specialized equipment like better knee pads for safety. Whether riding on a ramp or a sidewalk, it is a way to show great skill.
