It often involves organized competitions between professional players. These players can work alone or as part of a team. Many people enjoy watching these matches on streaming sites like YouTube and Twitch. This helped esports grow into a major part of the video game industry. Today, game developers even fund large tournaments for their games.

Competitive gaming has a very long history. The first known competition happened in 1972 at Stanford University. Students played a game called Spacewar! for a prize. In 1974, Sega held a large tournament in Japan. This event helped promote arcade games across the country. Later, the game Space Invaders made high-score chasing very popular. In 1980, an Atari contest for Space Invaders had over 10,000 players.

In the 1990s, the way people competed began to change. The game Street Fighter II helped players face each other directly. This was different from just trying to get a high score. This change led to the Evolution Championship Series, or EVO, in 1996. Many tournaments also grew because of the internet. In South Korea, many people played in internet cafes called PC bangs. The Korean e-Sports Association was even started in 2000.
