Playing games can happen in many different ways. Some people host LAN parties at home. A LAN party is a local gathering of friends and family. These events allow people to play together in the same room. Large public events also bring thousands of fans together. For example, the Everquest Fan Faires are huge social gatherings. Players can also join online communities to meet others. These groups help people find friends with the same interests. They can talk even if they live far apart.

This culture has a long and interesting history. The idea of a video game subculture began in 1996. It became a bigger subject for study in the 2010s. Online gaming grew from older systems used in the 1970s. These included bulletin board systems and college mainframes. In the 1990s, games like Quake changed everything. Quake allowed many players to play in a 3D world. This helped players form organized groups called clans. Clans have their own names, looks, and even rivalries.

Many interesting facts describe who plays these games today. In the United States, 71% of people aged six to forty-nine play games. About 55% of these gamers use smartphones or mobile devices. The average age of a gamer is around 31 years old. A 2016 study showed that 41% of gamers are female. In the UK, 93% of children have played video games. Some online games have millions of players at once. Games like World of Warcraft have massive player bases. These communities can even have their own virtual economies.

Gamers also use a special way of speaking. They use slang and terms that are unique to them. You might hear someone say "GG" to mean "good game." This is a kind way to end a match. Players also say "GL HF," which means "good luck, have fun." If a player is not at their desk, they say "AFK." This stands for "away from keyboard." Other words like "noob" describe players who are new. These words help gamers communicate quickly while they play.
