It happens when people wear costumes and accessories to look like a character. These characters can come from many places. People often choose heroes from anime, cartoons, or manga. They might also pick characters from video games or comic books. Some people even create their own original characters to represent. This activity lets fans show their love for stories through acting.

To do cosplay, a person must choose a subject for dramatic interpretation. This means they pick a character to act out. They might use clothing, makeup, or props to match the look. Many cosplayers meet at large fan conventions to share their work. At these events, they might enter contests or walk across a stage. Some people even do crossplay, which is dressing as a different gender.

People have enjoyed dressing up for a very long time. In the 15th century, people had masquerade balls during Carnival. By 1877, the writer Jules Verne sent invitations for a costume ball. In 1908, a couple in Ohio wore costumes of Mr. Skygack. This character came from a science fiction comic strip. Later, in 1939, Forrest J. Ackerman and Morojo attended a convention in New York. They wore "futuristicostumes" that Morojo had designed and sewn herself.

The word "cosplay" was created in Japan in June 1983.

A person named Nobuyuki Takahashi from Studio Hard made up the term. He combined the English words "costume" and "play." He wanted a new word because "masquerade" felt too old-fashioned. In Japan, the word uses the first two sounds of each English word. This created the Japanese blend "kosu" and "pure." Since the 1990s, cosplay has grown into a huge part of popular culture.

Cosplay connects to many different parts of our world. It links to history through old costume parties and balls. It also links to modern media like television and movies. Many fans use social networks and websites to share their hobby. Some people even turn their cosplay into a real career. For example, Brinke Stevens started acting after winning a contest at Comic-Con in 1974. Today, cosplay is a way for people to find community and joy.
