The term is a portmanteau of "costume" and "play." Participants, known as cosplayers, wear elaborate costumes and fashion accessories. They do this to represent specific characters through dramatic interpretation. This activity allows fans to embody the stories they love.

To engage in cosplay, a person selects a subject for representation. These subjects often come from anime, manga, or cartoons. They also include characters from comic books and television series. Video games and musical artists provide many popular sources. Some cosplayers even choose to represent original characters they created. The process involves matching the visual details of the character. This can include clothing, makeup, and various props.

Cosplay takes many different forms depending on the setting. Many people participate in crossplay, also called gender-bending. This involves dressing as a character of a different gender. Some cosplayers focus on social interaction within subcultures. Others participate in organized competitions at large fan conventions. These events often feature dedicated stages for performances. There are also many social networks and websites for sharing work.

While modern cosplay is recent, its roots reach back centuries. In the 15th century, masquerade balls were part of the Carnival season. These involved elaborate processions and allegorical entries. By 1877, novelist Jules Verne hosted a costume ball. He sent nearly 700 invitations to his guests. In 1908, a couple in Ohio emulated the character Mr. Skygack. This character came from a science fiction comic strip.

Modern fan costuming truly began at science fiction conventions. In 1939, Forrest J. Ackerman and Morojo attended the first Worldcon.

They wore "futuristicostumes" designed by Morojo. These outfits were based on pulp magazine artwork. Later, the term "cosplay" was officially coined in June 1983. Nobuyuki Takahashi of Studio Hard created the Japanese word. He combined "kosu" from costume and "pure" from play. He felt the word "masquerade" was too old-fashioned.

Since the 1990s, cosplay has seen rapid global growth. It is a major part of popular culture in Japan. It is also significant in East Asia and the West. In Japan, costuming was active by the 1970s. The Comiket convention launched in December 1975. The first documented Japanese fan costuming occurred at Ashinocon in 1978. At that event, Mari Kotani wore a costume from a novel.

Rules for cosplay often develop to manage specific trends. In the 1960s, a prop blaster fired real flames. This led to a ban on fire at conventions. In 1972, a costume made of peanut butter caused damage. The substance rubbed off on furniture and other people. Consequently, food and messy substances were banned. Other rules, like "No Costume is No Costume," banned full nudity. These rules ensure that conventions remain safe and functional for everyone.

Cosplay connects fans to various professional and social systems. It links media consumption to active, creative participation. For some, it serves as a bridge to professional careers. Brinke Stevens won first place at Comic-Con in 1974. Her Vampirella costume helped launch her acting career. Today, cosplay remains a powerful way to build community. It brings together people through shared passion and skill.
